Carbon Clean Press Release, December 6, 2023

Carbon Clean, a leader in revolutionising carbon capture solutions, has won a COP28 Energy Transition Changemaker award for its role on Ørsted’s FlagshipONE project, Europe’s largest eMethanol plant. Carbon Clean’s technology will capture 70,000 tonnes of COper year from the biomass-fired combined heat and power plant in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. FlagshipONE will be Ørsted’s first commercial-scale Power-to-X facility when it becomes operational in 2025.

Energy Transition Changemakers is a COP28 UAE Presidency initiative that aims to foster private sector collaboration in delivering innovative, scalable decarbonisation projects globally, as well as demonstrate solutions to help enable and accelerate the energy transition.

Carbon Clean was one of nine companies in the Heavy Emitting Sectors category that won an award, chosen from projects all over the world that are in development or operation. Projects must have overcome challenges through game-changing innovative solutions or approaches, and have the potential to be replicated and scaled elsewhere, accelerating the just energy transition benefiting society as a whole.

FlagshipONE will use Carbon Clean’s proprietary technology, which has been proven in numerous carbon capture projects around the world. Carbon Clean’s high-performance APBS-CDRMax® solvent delivers best-in-class environmental footprint, high stability, low corrosivity and low regeneration energy requirements, therefore reducing operational costs compared to conventional options.

Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, said: “We are delighted to receive a COP28 Energy Transition Changemaker award for our role on Ørsted’s pioneering project. FlagshipONE demonstrates how carbon capture technology can decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, such as shipping. The technology is available and able to deliver at scale. FlagshipONE exemplifies best practice in the utilisation of captured carbon – the ‘U’ in CCUS – and is a milestone project for Ørsted and for the shipping industry.”

FlagshipONE will supply up to 55,000 tonnes of eMethanol per year to the shipping industry, which today accounts for around 3% of global carbon emissions. The captured CO2 will be combined with renewable hydrogen to form the carbon-neutral liquid fuel eMethanol. Carbon emissions from shipping have proven hard to abate, but eMethanol is widely believed to be the best scalable green shipping fuel for the next decade.

When used as marine fuel, eMethanol reduces carbon emissions by 94% compared to current fossil fuels. By increasing access to carbon neutral fuel, Carbon Clean, together with Ørsted, will enable carbon-neutral shipping, accelerating the sector’s emission reductions.

Liquid Wind, the original developer of FlagshipONE, is continuing to develop a network of eFuel facilities and has ambitious long-term goals of developing multiple plants, together with its partner companies Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Topsoe.

The COP28 Energy Transition Changemakers Showcase event and awards ceremony took place on 5 December 2023 – Energy, Industry, and Just Transition Day – during COP28 UAE at Expo City Dubai.
